... ... 去年的12月13日， CHUCK终究未能度过那个黄昏， 虽然他永远不可能离开我们对他最深处的怀念， 而另我难过的是， 在我意识到来自DEATH的音乐中是一种如何打动我的旋律时， CHUCK已经再也不能创造出超越那声音的作品了， 或许真正热爱死亡金属的朋友们在得到那个另人悲痛的消息后是如何惋惜与感到失落，天嫉英才的残酷如此夺去了与DEATH有着相连命运的英雄， 即使在他最后对带生命的短暂时间里， 他的乐观仍然感动着每个人， 用生命写意的音乐发表了他人生最后一张不朽的专集《不息的声音》。而在一年后的今天， 让我们集聚在这里， 为你和你的成就而怀念…

... ... 我是带着个人感情色彩来写下这样的一片手记， 他们的一些内容也同样来自我这些日子在各种DEATH及其官方网站上精炼的传记， 我并不想在这样的一个日子里过多的强调DEATH 的曾经的功绩， 那些在我看来， 虽然只有音乐才真正能够替代CHUCK的语言， 我也并不想用很沉重的文字来写意他的生平， 应为无论DEATH是不是还在延续， CHUCK的生命依然鼓动在他流畅而神秘的音符里…

在很多的金属文献中，组建DEATH的灵魂人物主唱兼吉他手Chuck Schuldiner被看作是死亡金属之父。 他乐队的雏形成立于1983年的佛罗里达，那时侯的CHUCK只有15岁。 但是直到1987年， 乐队都没有发行他们的首张专集， 只是通过地下来流传一些DEMO和在嘈杂的酒吧玩着一种极端的金属，那时死亡金属这个概念正在世界的各个角落开始滋长， 而这个少年也注定要在这段历史上发挥重要的作用。从某种角度来说DEATH不是一个风格鲜明的乐队， 他每张作品的思路、风格都在变化，也因为他并不是一个成员固定的乐队。 但他的技术超群、意识超前。 DEATH是一支无法为其划分类别的独特乐队， 他从始至终都是最优秀的重金属乐队。 2001年12月13日对于所有的金属乐迷来说是难过的， 伟大的吉他英雄CHUCK因患脑癌离开了我们， 他一生中最富有创造力的时光都全部奉献给了重金属音乐， 他短暂的一生没有留下积蓄给家人， 也没有光环萦绕的荣誉， 但是他才华横溢的作品和只捉追求得人生态度被全世界的金属乐迷所尊敬， 他也因此获得在我们心中的永生！

DEATH不仅留下了精彩的音乐， 同样还代表一个能量巨大的团体。 多年的乐队生涯， CHUCK一直钟爱着自己的乐队， 他到处发掘优秀的乐手加盟这支乐队， 努力激进着乐队创作的思维，因此DEATH乐队的发展史中吸收了很多杰出的乐手， 他们同样也是很多杰出的金属团体的中间力量。 他们使佛罗里达为全世界重金属乐迷所熟知， 正是他们领导了整个90年代的美国金属乐坛。

... ... 我原本并不想在这里涉及到有关更多作品上的介绍的， 由于考虑到CHUCK是用他一生的心血来造就的这样一支如此有代表的乐队DEATH， 他的时间包括在病床上的精力都倾注到他的音乐中， 还有什么在这里更能比他的作品正能感觉到这存在呢？让我们来回顾一下乐队所发表的专集历程吧，DEATH一共有7张正式专集：

1988- Leprosy Combat

chuck的老友rozz加入进来，chuck展现了不少精彩solo，录音也有进步

1990- Spiritual Healing Combat

死亡金属界的大牌吉他手james muephy加入取代了rozz

1991- Human Combat

这次与chuck合作的是一支前卫死亡金属乐队Cynic的乐手，音乐风格更加技术化

1993- Individual Thought Patterns Combat

超级鼓手gene hoglan的加盟使乐队又增添了一件强有力的武器

1995- Symbolic Roadrunner Roadrunner

运用大量的变速变调，快慢有致，大段的solo也穿插的很巧妙，录音相当出色，整张专辑显得重型而清晰。

1998- Sound of Perseverance Nuclear Blast

《the sound of perseverance》我认为无疑是DEATH最好的一张专集，无论权衡乐曲的旋律性、复杂程度与重量的结合上兼不失色的一张专集。 在编曲上几种感情的音节交织复杂， CHUCK的嗓音也更富变化与技巧性，部分歌曲展现了前卫的创作方式，尤其是The sound of perseverance这首我最爱的作品深刻演示了CHUCK 的创作势力 ，3把风格的吉他共同交织演义出坚定不朽的声音。在这张专辑中death终于作到了残忍狂暴与复杂技术的完美结合。那是来自灵魂最坚定的声音...

不幸的降临
... ... 当CHUCK得知自己不幸的患上脑瘤后， DEATH 决定解散，他进入配合治疗的阶段， 但是不断攀升的医疗费用开销和常年来耗费在各种音乐制作上的资金缺乏， 来自金属界上百的乐手们开始给予大量的援助，他们举办各种方式的义演和义卖以此为了帮助Schuldiner 支付一些医疗费用，而Schuldiner 在他的治疗期间仍然发表了一张新专集也成为他生平最后一张作品，他的病情越来越糟糕，他的妈妈一直照顾他。很多摇滚艺术家象Dave Grohl, Napalm Death, Ozzy Osbourne还有Anthrax 不断的为CHUCK给予更多医治费用上的资助， Grohl 甚至希望让CHUCK加入到金属专集的共同录制，但是CHUCK最终在12.13的下午永远沉睡去了， 剩下的就是来自各种途径无数悲痛的悼词，在他去世后的几周内，官方网站上纪念册的留言信息汹涌的冲破了14，000条之多， 而事实上之前几乎没有什么主流媒体报道过关于他的病逝…

-1999- 关于成立站点的一些说明..
Permission was asked to the magazines to use their stuff, we got all the help we wanted from their side. We also wanted permission from Chuck to go along with it, and the first contacts were made with Nuclear Blast America. Maria, on behalf of Chuck, agreed! But asked us not to put on a discussionboard and not to put on soundfiles. We respected Chuck''''''''''''''''s wish and got back, really motivated to collecting, translating, scanning and lay-outing again.

Out of the blue, came the shocking news about Chuck''''''''''''''''s illness..... and all of a sudden everything seemed less important. On the other hand it inspired and motivated us even more to make something beautiful out of this for his sake. We decided to put on a guestbook.

-2000- 回顾过去的一年 ..
Over the past year a lot has happened and we thought it would be nice to look back on it all. First of all everything that happened with and around Chuck. Because of this, we got involved in things we would never have imagined when we started with this site. Before we knew it we were in over our heads.

The Dutch benefit concert and the benefit account kept us busy during the first four months of the year. We want to express the doubts we had about doing all this, knowing how much Chuck values his privacy we felt like we were crossing his personal boundaries. Decisions were made weighing the pros and cons while attempting to respect Chuck''''''''''''''''s privacy as much as possible.

May 24, after a few months of silence the devastating news got out that Chuck was indeed very ill again and had a major setback. The support and benefit page got back on top of the site again, and shortly thereafter the first benefit concerts started being organized. The response was overwhelming.... many, many emails and guestbook entries from all over the world were directly addressed towards Chuck, his mom is taking care of those messages coming to him.

October 19, the first personal message from Chuck arrived on the site in which he sends out his thanks for all the support world wide. After the over 18 months of "radio-silence" a lot of emotional responses followed. Due to the fact that Chuck still has a long way to go, the new Control Denied album has been postponed indefinitely. It is still far from finished, but well worth the wait...... We''''''''''''''''ll keep hoping for Chuck to recover and bring his music to life again.

One by one beautiful articles that, together with the condolences, showed how much Chuck was loved by his fans, proved that his music will live on. In our eyes it is a much-deserved homage to one of the pivotal figures of metal, who really made the difference. Memories that leave us with a melancholic feeling.

We were asked how things would go with the site in the future. We can be short and clear about that: we never doubted to continue with EmptyWords. It''''''''''''''''s an honor for us, to keep promoting Chuck''''''''''''''''s musical legacy this way.

What draw do you feel Florida has, outside of hurricane season, of course?

Chuck Schuldiner: Good question. I think, for one thing, I know personally, survival-wise, it is very economical. You can get a house down here for what people up North are paying for an efficiency apartment. That, I think, is a really big part of it. Honestly, in Florida, the only bands coming out of here now are Matchbox 20 and that type of stuff. For metal, Florida has had a little boom in Tampa for a while, with a lot of the bands getting picked up. Florida has never really been a big place for a lot of the big bands to come out of. [Death being the OBVIOUS exception! -- Aaron] Bigger bands in Florida are like Tom Petty from Gainesville...
